Writing a Linear Function from a Table — Easy Worksheet 2
Grade 8 · Whoobee Name: ____________________ Date: __________
Write an equation in the form y = mx + b for the function in each table.
How to solve
Find the slope m = (change in y) ÷ (change in x) using any two rows. Find the initial value b, the y-value when x = 0: read it from the table if x = 0 is there, otherwise work back to x = 0 using the rate of change. Then write y = mx + b.
Example
Write an equation for the function in the table.
| x | y |
|---|---|
| 0 | 1 |
| 1 | 3 |
| 2 | 5 |
| 3 | 7 |
Answer: y = 2x + 1
| x | y |
|---|---|
| 0 | 10 |
| 1 | 14 |
| 2 | 18 |
| 3 | 22 |
Not quite. The answer is
💡 Change in y = 14 − 10 = 4. Change in x = 1 − 0 = 1. Slope m = 4. The table shows x = 0 with y = 10, so b = 10. So y = 4x + 10.
✓ Correct!
Not quite. The answer is
💡 Change in y = 14 − 10 = 4. Change in x = 1 − 0 = 1. Slope m = 4. The table shows x = 0 with y = 10, so b = 10. So y = 4x + 10.
💡 How to solve: Writing a Linear Function from a Table
Find the slope m = (change in y) ÷ (change in x) using any two rows. Find the initial value b, the y-value when x = 0: read it from the table if x = 0 is there, otherwise work back to x = 0 using the rate of change. Then write y = mx + b.

Not quite. The answer is
💡 Change in y = 3 − 2 = 1. Change in x = 1 − 0 = 1. Slope m = 1. The table shows x = 0 with y = 2, so b = 2. So y = x + 2.
✓ Correct!
Not quite. The answer is
💡 Change in y = 3 − 2 = 1. Change in x = 1 − 0 = 1. Slope m = 1. The table shows x = 0 with y = 2, so b = 2. So y = x + 2.

✓ Correct!
Not quite. The answer is
💡 Change in y = 9 − 6 = 3. Change in x = 1 − 0 = 1. Slope m = 3. The table shows x = 0 with y = 6, so b = 6. So y = 3x + 6.
