Scaled Copies: Scale Factor, Angles & Area — Easy Worksheet 2
Grade 7 · MathSheets Name: ____________________ Date: __________
Use the scale factor. Remember: lengths are multiplied by the scale factor, angles stay the same, and areas are multiplied by the scale factor squared.
How to solve
In a scaled copy every length is multiplied by the same scale factor. Scale factor = copy length ÷ original length. Angles do not change. Area is multiplied by the scale factor twice: with scale factor 3, a 2-by-4 rectangle (area 8) becomes 6-by-12 (area 72 = 8 × 9). A scale like 1 to 50,000 means 1 cm on the map is 50,000 cm (500 m) in real life.
Example
A rectangle is 2 cm by 6 cm. A scaled copy is 4 cm by 12 cm. What is the scale factor?
