Order of Operations with Negative Numbers — Easy Worksheet 2

Grade 7 · MathSheets    Name: ____________________   Date: __________

Evaluate each expression. Work inside parentheses and brackets first, then exponents, then multiply and divide from left to right, then add and subtract from left to right.

How to solve

Follow the order of operations: parentheses and brackets first (innermost first), then exponents, then multiplication and division from left to right, then addition and subtraction from left to right. Multiplication does not come before division: 24 ÷ 4 × 2 = 6 × 2 = 12. Watch the signs: a negative times a negative is positive, so (-3) × (-4) = 12. An exponent belongs only to what it touches: (-4)² = (-4) × (-4) = 16, but -4² means -(4 × 4) = -16. Treat absolute value bars like parentheses: |3 - 8| = |-5| = 5.

Example

(-9) + (-8) × (-3) = ___

Answer: 15

right so far
1 ((-8) + 11) × 9 = ___
2 7 + (-5) × (-3) = ___
3 5 × ((-12) - (-7)) = ___
4 (-35) ÷ (-7) + (-1) = ___
5 (10 - 26) ÷ (-8) = ___
6 1 - 11 × (-5) = ___
7 ((-5) + 2) × (-7) = ___
8 3 × ((-9) - 2) = ___
