Fraction Word Problems — Easy Worksheet 2

Grade 5 · Whoobee    Name: ____________________   Date: __________

Solve each problem. Write just the number, in simplest form, as a mixed number if it is greater than 1.

How to solve

Decide what the story asks. "In all" or "altogether" means add; "left", "how much more" or "how much longer" means subtract. To add or subtract, rewrite the fractions with a common denominator first: 12 + 13 = 36 + 26 = 56. A fraction "of" an amount means multiply: 23 of 34 is 23 × 34 = 612 = 12. Multiply the numerators and multiply the denominators; change a mixed number to an improper fraction first: 2 12 × 12 = 52 × 12 = 54 = 1 14. Simplify at the end.
