Estimating Products & Quotients — Easy Worksheet 1

Grade 4 · MathSheets    Name: ____________________   Date: __________

Estimate. Round the way each question says. To divide, change the dividend to the closest compatible number: a basic fact for the divisor followed by zeros.

How to solve

To estimate a product, round first and then multiply: 47 × 6 is about 50 × 6 = 300, and 38 × 52 is about 40 × 50 = 2,000. To estimate a quotient, use compatible numbers: change the dividend to the closest number that makes a basic fact with the divisor. For 178 ÷ 3, think of 18 ÷ 3 = 6, so use 180 ÷ 3 = 60. If you rounded a factor up, the exact product is less than your estimate; if you rounded down, it is greater. An estimate tells you whether an exact answer is reasonable.

Example

Round 89 to the nearest ten, then multiply: 89 × 7 ≈ ___

Answer: 630

1. Round 82 to the nearest ten, then multiply: 82 × 7 ≈ ___
2. Use compatible numbers: 349 ÷ 4 is about 360 ÷ 4 = ___
3. Round 91 to the nearest ten, then multiply: 91 × 8 ≈ ___
4. Use compatible numbers: 207 ÷ 3 is about 210 ÷ 3 = ___
5. Round 27 to the nearest ten, then multiply: 27 × 7 ≈ ___
6. Use compatible numbers: 414 ÷ 8 is about 400 ÷ 8 = ___
7. Round 44 to the nearest ten, then multiply: 44 × 9 ≈ ___
