Lesson: More or Fewer? (Kindergarten)

To see which group has more, give everyone a partner. The group with leftovers has more.

Match them up

There are some apples and some lemons. Which group has more?

Draw a line from each apple to one lemon.

no partner! 5 apples, 3 lemons
2 apples have no lemon partner. So there are MORE apples.

Two apples are left over with no partner. So there are more apples and fewer lemons.

Build towers

Another way: stack blocks. One block for each thing. The taller tower has more.

7 = more4 = fewer
7 blocks make a taller tower than 4 blocks.

Words to use

  • More: the group with extra
  • Fewer (or less): the group that runs out first
  • Same: everyone has a partner, nobody left over

Play at home

Put a pile of spoons and a pile of forks on the table. Make pairs. Which pile has more? Then swap in toy cars, socks, or crayons.
