Lesson: Counting Money (Grade 2)

Start with the coin worth the most. Then count on.

Meet the coins

1¢ 5¢ 10¢ 25¢ penny nickel dime quarter
The dime is the smallest coin, but it is worth more than a penny or a nickel!
Coin Worth
Penny 1 cent (1¢)
Nickel 5 cents (5¢)
Dime 10 cents (10¢)
Quarter 25 cents (25¢)

Big is not always more. A small dime (10¢) is worth more than a big nickel (5¢).

Let's count these coins

We have 1 quarter, 2 dimes, 1 nickel and 3 pennies. Line them up from most to least. Then count on.

Say the purple numbers out loud as you touch each coin.

The last number is the answer: 53¢.

Writing money

53 cents can be written two ways:

  • 53¢
  • $0.53

With the $ sign, the dot comes before the cents. One dollar and 5 cents is $1.05.

Your turn

How much is 3 dimes, 1 nickel and 4 pennies?

Count on: 10, 20, 30 … 35 … 36, 37, 38, 39¢.

Play shop at home
